Module 1: Sewing Pattern Fundamentals
Before you cut your first piece of fabric, it helps to understand what you are holding. This module explains what a sewing pattern is, how to read it, and why it is drawn the way it is. It is useful both for people who have never seen one and for people who already sew but have always copied from another garment.
- What a Sewing Pattern Is and What It Contains — Understand what a sewing pattern is, what information it contains, and why a well-made pattern saves fabric, time, and mistakes.
- Sewing Pattern Symbols and Markings — Learn to read any pattern without having to ask what each mark means.
- Seam Allowances: What They Are and How Much Each Seam Needs — Know how much seam allowance each seam needs, and tell whether a pattern includes it before you cut.
- Garment Anatomy: How a Garment Breaks Down into Pieces — Be able to look at a garment and anticipate how many pieces its pattern has and how they join together.
