Two-layer shorts: the loose outer layer, with a short leg and a curved hem with a slit, has a patch pocket with a horizontal zipper on each thigh and a fine drawstring at the waist. The inner layer is a fitted black short that peeks out below the hem and has its own pocket for the phone.
A lightweight polyester with some spandex works best for the outer layer and a firm, elastic jersey knit for the inner short. Join both layers only at the waist and leave the hems free, and sew the zippers in before assembling the pockets so they lie flat.
